Abstract
Autoimmune diseases affect approximately 1 in 10 people. Patients currently face high rates of treatment failure and side effects from immunosuppression. In this project, we are generating and analyzing microscopy, spatial transcriptomics, sequencing, and mass spectrometry data to better understand the molecular and cellular basis of autoimmune disease. Focusing on experiments using cells in culture and tissue samples from patients, we are uncovering the spatial control of gene expression in adaptive immunity and autoimmune disease across scales from the subcellular to the tissue. Overall, we aim to identify new therapeutic approaches and evaluate the potential of repurposed treatments targeting specific gene expression programs.
