Abstract

Transition zones—such as those between slab and ballasted track or at bridge approaches—represent a critical challenge in railway infrastructure due to the abrupt change in track stiffness. These discontinuities often lead to elevated dynamic loads, accelerated track degradation, and uneven settlement. This research aims to develop a robust vehicle–track–ground interaction model capable of analysing and optimising reinforcement strategies for transition zones under varying conditions, including different subgrade properties. The finite element software Abaqus will be employed to build and validate the numerical model, providing a framework to improve transition zone design and long-term performance.
