Abstract

This project aims to investigate the influence of complex cloud systems on the Arctic energy balance. Arctic clouds are one key element of the feedback processes that result in Arctic amplification, an enhanced warming in the Arctic due to climate change. Arctic amplification can have significant influence on a global scale. Since clouds and the processes related to them are poorly constrained in climate models we need to understand the underlying physics and the representation of clouds in climate models if we want to improve climate projections/simulations in future. The focus of this project is to understand the microphysical processes happening in Arctic mixed-phase clouds and to test and verify new and existing parameterisation schemes. This will be pursued by large-eddy simulation modelling of different Arctic case studies.
