Abstract

With an increasing desire for the transition to green energy, there is a skyrocketing demand for permanent magnets (PM). These are an essential part of electric motors and are used in high quantities in wind turbines. However, all the commercially used PM contain rare-earth (RE) elements, which are expensive, mined with a high risk for the environment, and are barely recyclable. The current project is aimed at finding rare-earth-free (RE-free) and rare-earth-lean permanent magnets (PM). Alena Vishina (AV) and Madhura Marathe (MM) work on different materials. Alena Vishina is currently investigating RE-lean promising magnetic structures, such 2-17 and 1-5, with RE = La and Ce, which are more abundant than other RE. She will also continue applying her data-mining techniques to different magnetic materials. Madhura Marathe will continue her previous research into Heisler alloys.
