Abstract

The research group ”Vehicle Aerodynamic Laboratory” at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences at Chalmers is using numerical simulations for prediction of flows around ground vehicles (such as trains, cars, trucks) and ships. The group also contributes to the improvement of the aerodynamic performance of vehicles using flow-control. The research group is well known for its unique activity in particular using time-dependent numerical simulations of turbulent flows. In addition, a new frontier the group is successfully investigating is machine learning coupled with flow-control. Generally, there are six main activities planned for the upcoming round of assigned resources: • Numerical simulations for flow-control. This study aims to understand the flow-control mechanisms and improve the aerodynamic performance of transport vehicles. • Improving of machine learning/flow-control (ML/FC) processes. • The aerodynamic impact of ground effect and a generic study of aerodynamic performance on high-speed trains. • The aerodynamic impact of tunnel pass-through and side wind on high-speed trains. • The aeroacoustic impact of high-speed train in residential areas. • Continued development and validation of the state of the art partially averaged Navier-Stokes (PANS) turbulence model. The computational cost requested by all these project for this round amount to 500,000 CPUhours/month. Our activity is mainly within Chalmers Area of Advance Transport and Area of Advance Energy.
