Abstract
The ever-increasing demand for electricity/energy due to the modern society’s globalization, industrialization, and urbanization has triggered the quest for highly efficient and sustainable resources for renewable energy. In addition to that, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - which has been steadily rising since the beginning of the industrial age - is now faltering around a point of no return and on the verge of causing a dramatic climate change. In this regard electrocatalysts that can (i) can split water into hydrogen and oxygen and (ii) utilize carbon dioxide as C1 building block have emerged as potential solution. Finding the best performing and cost effective electrocatalysts have never been more compelling.
In order to develop next generation electrocatalysts with cutting edge efficiency, understanding the active reaction intermediates is of paramount interest. It will not only help us to understand the possible reaction mechanisms, but also can help to do educated guess for the structural and electronic parameters of the better catalysts.
