Abstract

EC-Earth3 and EC-Earth4 will continue to be central to earth system modelling (ESM) efforts in Sweden going forward, with Horizon Europe (HE) participation being an immediate priority, and CMIP7 a real possibility in the coming years. We request storage space to enable test runs and development of EC-Earth3 and EC-Earth4 for the HE projects RESCUE (Start 1 Sep 2022, led by BSC in Barcelona) and OptimESM (Expected start date Jan 2023, led by SMHI). In particular, we will improve the representations of carbon and methane cycling, permafrost, wildfires, forestry and terrestrial carbon dioxide removal methods in our vegetation model LPJ-GUESS and the EC-Earth (Döscher et al. 2022) ESM of which it is a component. For recent development we used storage granted to the Large S-CMIP project. This ends in July 2022, so additional storage space is crucial to allow for test runs and storage of model input and output.
