Abstract

The goal of this project is to provide a detailed understanding on the influence of the solar wind plasma on planetary magnetosphere using state-of-the-art computer simulations and through comparison with spacecraft observations. We will use a well-established hybrid-kinetic plasma model that runs on GPUs and our primary focus is on the global and local structure of the magnetosphere of terrestrial planets (e.g., Mercury, Earth, and Mars). We have currently two research projects funded by the National Research Council (VR) and the Swedish National Space Agency (Rymdstyrelsen) to study the magnetosphere of Earth and Mars using spacecraft observations and plasma simulations.
