Abstract

Glucose (GLUT) transporters play an integral role in the metabolism of monosaccharides. Dysfunction or altered expression of GLUTs is associated with diabetes and severe metabolic disorders. Their high medical relevance makes GLUTs valuable drug targets. However, the molecular basis for sugar specificity is poorly understood, which limits our understanding of their role in human metabolism and their targeting in drug development. This proposal aims to discover lead molecule candidates to inhibit sugar uptake by pathogens (malaria) or malignant cells (cancers). The goal is to starve these cells in order to stop the progression of these diseases but also to obtain tool compounds to understand how these sugars transporters function at a molecular level.
