Abstract

Darwin's theory of evolution posits the survival of the fittest; yet the world is full of examples of cases in which individuals behave cooperatively or altruistically a way that at first sight appear opposed to their own self interest. Understanding the mechanisms that nonetheless allow cooperation to evolve is important both for achieving a better understanding of evolutionary processes and for devising practical strategies that promote and maintain cooperation in human societies. In this project, we explore under which circumstances ubiquitous mechanisms such as condition-dependent movement and conditional interactions promote the evolution of cooperation.
