Abstract

The project will investigate risk of cancer from exposure to low doses of neutrons. The project will combine the disciplines of radiation physics, radiobiology, and epidemiology to develop a risk model that will be tested in a prospective study on the incidence of second cancers following exposure to scattered neutrons following pediatric proton therapy. The final project results are likely to make a major contribution to our understanding of the risks from low-dose exposure to neutrons, and how the risk vary with neutron energy and dose. The work within this project includes many tasks. The ones we are involved in concern: Characterization of the experimental radiation beams and determination of full radiation field at the point of interest; Measurement and modelling of neutron fluence and energy spectra out of the treatment field in proton therapy beams. Modelling will be performed using a MC code PHITS.
