Abstract

Contrarily to crystalline materials, amorphous solids lack long-range atomic order. The thermal and vibrational properties of amorphous solids represent a fascinating and active field of study and poses intriguing scientific questions regarding its microscopic origin and the importance of the elastic disorder, such as, for example: what would be the consequences of regaining long-range ordering? On the other hand, the newly gained control of sound waves and thermal vibrations by nanodesign of periodic superlattice structures of elastic materials (phononic materials) emphasizes the relevance of the periodicity of superstructures to contribute to thermal and acoustic transport. The project is to blend these two research fields, amorphous solids and phononic materials, through the development of a mathematical model and the corresponding computational implementation of a description of elastic scattering along with the pertinent numerical simulations of thermal and vibrational properties.
