Abstract

We will continue work on the VR project 'Simulating green Sahara with an earth system model' . We have tested the new CMIP6 versions of EC-Earth in 2018 and the model version will be used for the planned simulations with coupled EC-Earth and LPJ-GUESS model, as well as a 2000 years long transient simulation. These simulations aim to test the capability of the ESM to reproduce a greening of Sahara under certain climate conditions. If the model can reproduce this expected results, further studies will focus on understanding the reason for the abrupt change happened in the past and may happen in the near future. The mechanism involved including the vegetation-dust-climate integration. The committed CMIP6 simulations will officially start in 2019 due to the delay of final model version frozen. We also work on the implementation of water isotope tracers in OpenIFS and now the coding is just started, hopefully the model testing and sensitivity experiments will be run in 2019. This work is supported by a VR grant. Our modelling group now consists one senior scientist (myself) who is actively running the model simulations, together with two scientific programmers Qiang Li and Jenson Zhang, as well as two PhD students. We also have master students and visiting scholar analysing the model results for different projects.
