Abstract

Within a ‘green sahara’ project, we have run a series of sensitivity experiments with EC-Earth 3.1 during 2016. These simulations have clarified the interaction between different forcings such as vegetation and dust on local and global climate. Several regional climate responses such as Arctic, tropical Pacific have been investigated and and Several publications are published/submitted and in preparation based on these simulations. The data have been shared within the PMIP community and regional model downscaling group. By doing this we have established several national and Nordic collaborations on climate modelling and been involved in climate relevant proposal applications. We foresee more modelling demands in coming year with such collaboration development. In 2017 we will focus on the CMIP6 version of EC-Earth for paleo simulations. The new implemented component LPJ-GUESS and carbon cycle are particularly important for paleo experiments, though higher demands on computer resources will be needed. We will perform these simulations by sharing among several relevant projects. In the beginning the model tunning will be needed for low resolution of EC-Earth 3.2. As described in last year’s proposal, we also have several grants that require modelling effort. In a new VR grant “Greenland in a warming climate” (2015-2017), we have improved the snow parameterisation and surface process of ice-sheet in EC-Earth, in order to understand the interaction between the Greenland ice-sheet and Arctic climate. The work is submitted within a collaboration with scientist in KNMI and DMI and will continue with the new EC-Earth version. As part of the previous SNSB (Swedish National Space Board) project “Atmospheric modelling using space-based observations of stable water isotopes”, we have one PhD project with implementing the stable water isotope into OpenIFS, the work in ongoing. Our modelling group now consists one senior scientist (myself) who is actively running the model simulations, together with two scientific programmers Qiang Li and Jenson Zhang, as well as two PhD students. We also have master students and visiting scholar analysing the model results for different projects.
