Abstract

Galling, which is transfer and accumulation of sheet materials to the tool surface, is one of the major causes for tool failure in sheet metal forming. The onset of the material transfer process occurs at nanoscale, which is inaccessible by macroscopic experiments. Instead, atomistic modelling is an inviting indispensable technique to gain more insight on the mechanisms of materials transfer. It has recently become clear that three-dimensional simulations are necessary to obtain quantitatively accurate results, improving upon previously obtained two-dimensional results. The planned project aims at finding materials with improved anti-galling resistance, offering the possibility to develop new generations of advance tool materials. The effect of nano-sized precipitates, phase composition, chemical composition and temperature will be investigated by means of classical molecular dynamics.
