Abstract

The research group called Vehicle Aerodynamic Laboratory at the Department of Applied Mechanics at Chalmers is using numerical simulations for prediction of flows around ground vehicles (such as trains, cars, trucks and buses) but also for improvement of the aerodynamic performance of vehicles using shape optimization or flow control. The research group is well known for its unique activity in particular using time-dependent numerical simulations of turbulent flows. There are at the moment three main activities within our research group: 1. Prediction of vehicle flow using time-dependent simulations such as large eddy simulation (LES) or Partial-averaged Navier-Stokes (PANS) 2. Numerical simulations for flow control with the aim of understanding the flow control mechanisms and improvement of aerodynamic performance of vehicles 3. Numerical simulations for understanding of vehicles stability due to atmospheric conditions, overtaking etc. Large part of our activity is within Chalmers Area of Advance Transport where we are working both with aerodynamic stability within excellence profile Traffic Safety but also with drag reduction within excellence profile Sustainable Vehicle and Fuels. The present application focuses on the work in flow prediction, flow control and aerodynamic stability of vehicles.
